Getting Your Nonprofit Noticed

Meet Ashely Vann. She uses storytelling as the bridge from nonprofit to corporate dollars and she’s going to tell you how she does it! Ashley is the President of Vann Strategies and Founder of the Victory Cup Initiative.

This month's guest on the StoryMaven podcast is Ashley Vann, President of Vann Strategies and Founder of the Victory Cup Initiative. Ashley is dedicated to promoting the work of nonprofit organizations in the Central Florida community. Her passion is for uniting donors with the causes they care about sparked her idea for the inaugural Victory Cup Initiative.

I work with the Victory Cup Initiative as the Story Coach, to give 10 nonprofit Executive Directors  the storytelling skills that help them share the impact of their organization (And get them a big cash prize!) In this episode you hear exactly what the Victory Cup is, how Ashely raises money for it, and how much we gave away this year. Ashley & I talk about our behind-the-scenes experience of making sure that nonprofits get noticed by telling their stories.

StoryMaven Takeaways:

  • Ashley is fearless about money. She’s not afraid to ask people to give! You’ll get a lot from her fearlessness and how she connects people to generosity and her ease in her relationship to money. She’s not scared of it!

  • Ashley’s passion for using storytelling to connect need and gift. How would storytelling help you reconcile your relationship with money? How would focusing on the story help you connect need and gift?

  • “When you hear someone else’s story it can change your perspective for the rest of your life.” What stories have stuck with you? What organizations do you support and why? What about their story moves you to action?

  • Authenticity wins in presenting your story. We’ve seen it time and time again. When someone messes up a sentence or a word, it doesn’t matter. What matters is the heart of the story and the speaker’s connection to it.

  • Ashley gives a compelling reason for why businesses WANT to hear from nonprofits—they want to feel connected more to their ‘why’ to their purpose as a business, beyond just a ‘job’. Have confidence that your message as a nonprofit is wanted and needed! Don’t be afraid to share your story.

  • Giving and storytelling take on a spiritual dimension for Ashley. What deeper levels does story bring out for you and your organization?
