If This Week Has You Feeling Stuck…
…then my conversation with screenwriter Clare Sera will help you find your ‘page 60’ and move past what’s blocking you. This week on the StoryMaven podcast I interview one of my best gal pals Clare Sera. According to Clare, page 60 of every movie script is where screenwriter’s get stuck. She got me thinking about what my ‘page 60’ is, how to recognize it, and how to move past it.
Show Notes
This week’s guest: Clare Sera. She’s a screenwriter living and working in Los Angeles. Her big name films include Smallfoot — the Warner Brothers animated film about a A Yeti who is convinced that the elusive creatures known as "humans" really do exist, and yes, she spent much of 2017 trapped in a sound booth with Channing Tatum. She also co-wrote Blended, a romantic comedy which starred Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler. As an actress you might recognize her as the wife of the Prime Minister in The Princess Diaries movies. I have known Clare for many years, in fact she’s one of my dearest friends. There’s nothing Clare & I love more than Porch Time — which involves a glass of wine or mug of tea, a porch, natural beauty and hours talking about our lives, our art and our craft. In this episode we hang out for some virtual porch time to talk about creative blocks, moving forward and of course, Channing Tatum.
StoryMaven Takeaways:
Keep going! You have a calling and you need to keep going. The calling on you to start your business, your nonprofit can fade when you get into the nitty gritty of the daily work. Rise up and remember your calling!
“We tell stories because we must and the source of that must isn’t talent or knowledge, it’s mystery.” Clare literally showed me a frame with a ripped out piece of magazine with this quote on it. A gold start to anyone who finds out who said it and drops the attribution in my facebook page. You can find me at @Tellyourstoryworkshops.
We are telling our own story over and over again. Take a look at the themes of the stories you keep telling — do you see a personal theme that keeps occurring?
Every story is a mystery. Will they or won’t they? Ask yourself that question about what you’re writing. In my course we’ll look at how to apply this to business and marketing writing. I promise you can and it will help!
The importance of pre-writing. Research, reading, daydreaming, going on tangents. Take Clare’s advice that you can trust yourself that you won’t get lost.
What is your Page 60? Where’s the place you consistently get stuck and what do you need to do to move yourself forward?
Pro Tip: get a pool float.
